Starting Issues

#1 Unread post by vacancy »

Hey. Got a 1986 Kawasaki ZX1000R that cranks but won't start. Got new plugs with lovely blue sparks, compression, and fuel getting at least as far as the float bowls. Started up on ether when I got it a month ago. After it warmed up and ran on gas for a few minutes, it started up fine on it's own. Then it rained. The gas cap was drilled out, so it was possible that water got into the fuel. Drained the tank, bought a new gas cap and put it on, drained the float bowls and put in fresh fuel with a little alcohol just in case and let it vent for a few minutes. Damn thing won't start. Is it possible that the carbs got that gummed up in such a short time?

Any ideas? Obvious or not so obvious things I should try?

Thanks!

Jonah
