I use a packpack now and its fine. Its also cheap and is more than just for use on the bike itself.

You didn't say what type and size bike you were getting. That can also make a difference in your opitons.

I'll be getting a used SV650 as my first bike.

I ended up getting this in red for $55 shipped: http://www.thewaterproofstore.com/ob1014blk.html

Solves my waterproof issues and has lots of space, good straps and no zippers to have come open on the road...
