considering either a '95Vulcan 750 or '81Yamaha Seca 750

I'n considering the purchase of either a 1995 Vulcan 750 or a 1981 Yamaha Seca 750. They are about the same in cost. The Vulcan needs rebuilt carbs while the Seca is ready to go.purchase

I used to have a bike several years back, but sold it and miss not having one. I'm mainly looking for a good bike to drive back and forth to work (20 miles each way). I'm 6'2" and weigh 240.

In your opinion which is the better bike? Which gets better gas mileage? Any pro's or con's on either bike?

well, without any in-depth research on either of them, i'd guess that the vulcan would provide better gas mileage due to having 14 years of technological advancements. it'd probably also be less down-time, typically, due again to the 14-year age difference.

that's all considering same routing maintenance and upkeep, same riding style, and same riding conditions on both bikes.

unfortunately, i don't know much about either bike as far as engine track record for reliability or longevity, and also know nothing about either of the sellers. i know i probably didn't provide much help at all, but you might look in the brand forums farther down to see if there's a few posts about the bikes you're looking at.

Sheesh, if that logic worked for everything, you'd think after 59 years of technological advances, the gas mileage for my F-150 would be half-way decent. :frusty:

Nevermind - I guess that would make too much sense. :-(

And if my memory serves me correctly, the Yamaha actually gets better gas mileage than the Vulcan does by a considerable amount.

definitely the F150. the scout's a real pain to get parts for. have to order almost everything off the internet.

I've always liked the Seca too, cool bikes.

Two things to consider here.

First, the bikes are 2 different style of rides. The Seca is an upright standard, more sporty.

The Vulcan is more of a laid-back cruiser by comparison, so the way you want to ride should be a major factor in your decision.

Either bike will do anything you want to do on it, but one or the other is going to feel better to you depending on your preferences. It would be nice to try them both, or similar bikes if necessary, if you are still unsure at this point.

Secondly, the Seca is 28 years old, about twice as old as the Vulcan. Things like seals, gaskets, flexxy rubber things, and especially the wiring will be getting old and brittle on both bikes, but twice as old on the Seca. You could spend a lot of time and a modest amount of money replacing those things as they fail on both bikes, but obviously the Seca will be the worst offender.

Gas mileage? No idea. Any bike gets good enough mileage for me. Cleaning the carbs isn't too difficult on either bike.

I would buy the bike that fit my riding style best. That would be the Seca for me.

I agree with whoever said it all depends on the riding style you prefer. I like the looks of the seca but I guess it depends which bike you feel most comfortable. But in some ways I wouldnt be to concered with the year if you are mechanically inclined. My husband just bought my dad a 78 Yamaha 400 and it was in pretty decent condition better then my 88 so it all depends.

from experence (look below) the vulcan is damn near bulletproof, has a lot of useable power is easy to handle and fun to ride. Just..... if it has a maintance type battery plan on changing it out to a maintance free, and lube your splines. i personally do not know anything about the seca
