Some Used Motorcycle Statistics

#1 Post by RhadamYgg » Sun Aug 09, 2009 4:10 am

So, I've been to a place called The Cycle Exchange and they have a lot of used bikes for sale and it was really clean.

They also have a great website and they list their bikes with prices. Now I have no idea how accurate their prices are; however, I took a lot of information from their site - to generate some statistical data. They have over 55 bikes for sale, but some didn't have enough information for me to use and I excluded anything that I considered non-motorcycle.

Since I'm not much of a haggler I'll take their prices as what I'd pay for the bikes.

The data in comma delimited format:

55,2008,Harley Davidson,Road King Screaming Eagle,24999,6500,,1,6500

There is an empty column for Damage - turned out that none of the bikes had any. They had a bunch of bikes with light damage a while back when I checked their site out.

The most expensive bike they had was:
2008 HD Road King Screaming Eagle @ $24,999 with 6500 miles on it.

The least expensive bike they had were:
1993 Honda CBR 600 F2 @ $2,499
2004 Kawasaki Ninja 500 @ $2,499

The average used motorcycle price was:
$8,228

(In reference to another web topic - how many miles do you have on your bike...)
The Maximum number of miles on a used bike was:
54,000 on a 1986 Honda Gold Wing Aspencade

While that seems like a lot of miles, it is only 2347 miles per year.

(In reference to another web topic - how little number of miles on a bike when you are looking for a used newish bike...)
The Minimum number of miles on a used bike was:
25 on a 2008 Yamaha R6 - for sale @ $8,199 (very near the average sale price for a used bike). It seems to sell for $9500 new (give or take) + your OTD costs. So, $8,199 seems like it could be a real price break - but you'd have to keep in mind that the bike wasn't even broken in...

And no, I don't understand that. I'm really just starting to know (and actually like) my Suzuki B-King and I've put 1185 miles on it at this point.

The maximum age of a bike on sale is:
26 year old for 1983 Honda Gold Wing Interstate @ $2,999 with 30,000 miles on it.

The minimum age of a bike on sale is:
Less than 1 year - 2009 Honda VTX 1300 $7,999 with 4500 miles on it.

The average age of a used bike for sale is: 5.8 years old.

But the best piece of information I gathered was this -
The number of miles on used bikes for every year of age is:
2227 miles.

So, from this I would gather that the average motorcycle rider puts less than 2,500 miles a year on their bike.

The maximum number of miles per year was on this bike:
2005 HD Ultra Classic with 32,000 miles on it or 8,000 miles per year.

The minimum number of miles per year of course is the same bike that had 25 miles on it. :( If they rented bikes I'd rent that bike and put some miles on it to make it respectable. Jeez, 25 miles. What'd they do, get on the bike and ride it around the neighborhood a few times and decided they were scared shitless? Then again, if they were truly scared I'd rather they got off the bike and sold it than became a fatality.

I didn't do anything like intra-quartile ranges - which would probably make the averages more accurate. The sample size is a little small. I could increase the sample size if any of you can direct me to another large seller of used bikes that posts reasonable prices. We might have some movement in the numbers or not.

There were a few bikes that kinda threw me - 2 "Big Dog" motorcycles that I'd never heard of before but seem to be built from the ground up custom bikes.

Some brands are under-represented - such as Buells.

But on the whole I think the data is pretty good. I didn't classify the bikes by type either. It would have made my sample far too small to say the average used cruiser costs X or the average sport bike or tourer costs y on the basis of only a few bikes each.

I only wish I'd done this earlier when their stocks were almost all different bikes. And then grabbed this information now and I'd have a sample size that is almost twice the size of this.

They had a bike I probably should have bought, too. A 1985 Honda Interceptor in beautiful condition - and cheap as all hell too...

Anyway, sorry for boring you guys with my statistical musings, but some of you might find this information useful.

It can answer some questions like - do you put more or less miles on your bike than the average motorcycle rider?

You know, I can't stop looking at and shopping for motorcycles, either, even thought I love my Versys and don't have any desire to change. My excuse is that sometime in the next year or so, Hubby will be looking for an upgrade, so I'm just keeping my finger on the pulse of the market. I dearly want to test ride all kinds of bikes: biggish cruisers, littler cruisers, sport tourers, dual sports, offroads, etc. And by all kinds of makers. I just want to know and compare what they are like, strengths & weaknesses, in regard to price.

Nearby dealer has a Triumph Speedmaster with 700 miles on it, for $6000 USD. Hubby won't test ride it, because, as he said: "I'm not done dropping the VStar yet!" It's a valid point, but I'm dying for him to give it a whirl, because then I would have an excuse to try it out as well. Then there is a Honda Shadow 1100 with 3-4000 miles on it, all decked out, for the same price. I want to compare them!! I wanna, I wanna, I wanna ride them both!! :crybaby:

Rhadam, did you throw out the high and the low to get the average miles and cost per bike? That might affect your numbers quite a bit if you did not.

Speaking for myself I've only been riding for a year and a half but I averaged just over 2600 miles/year which is right in line with your analysis.

Wow. I can't imagine averaging less than 5k a year. I put on 4500 in the 5.5 months I had the bike (@#$% crash...). My poor dog probably won't see me for more than an hour a day once I get another one.

You ain't kidding about that, when I get my bike back this weekend (when not if, hopefully), I'm gonna disappear all weekend.
