Help! new rider needs advice

Let me start by introducing myself. My name is Eric. I am 35 yrs. old. I am 6ft, approx. 230 lbs. My situation is this.. I haven't been on a bike(motorcycle) in 15 yrs. I recently got my rider's permit and I am currently enrolled in the MSF(currently attending). The reason for the renewed interest in motorcycles, is that I have been wanting one for awhile. My father is getting a new bike and wants to give me his old bike..a 2000 Kawasaki Nomad 1500. This is a big bike for a newbie. Any advise out there on getting used to this bike? I was figuring on practicing on vacant parking lots for awhile to get used to it. Thanks in advance, figured this would be the palce to ask.

Would your father consider adopting me instead?

Take the bike, say thank you very much and just be careful with the throttle. If you are a strong guy, you won't have a problem with the weight.

Thanks blues2cruise. I plan on taking it really easy at first with this bike.

You might look for an MSF Experienced Rider Course for brush up AND to help learn the bike.
