Agreed, being separated from your buddy or buddies for a bit is fine. I am more comfortable with a car jumping in line than riding one bike length from the guy in front of me. This is a reason why I don't bother with organized bike rides where people are generally expected to ride in close formation.

I have been on 3 group rides that were organized to various degrees. The well run ones with police escorts are pretty safe I feel. I have no problem being a part of them especially if they are for a good cause. Like minded folks on motorcycles in a well organized ride obeying the laws are as safe as me out on the street alone I think. Typically cars do not jump in to these groups.
