I travelled just under 7000 miles on my trip this summer. I was away from home for 6 weeks.

7 nights in Arkansas
3 nights at Mustang Island State Park
2 nights in Santa Fe
2 nights in Keystone
14 nights in Osoyoos

That left me with 3 weeks for actually, riding and I figure I did pretty well for riding alone.

You would not want to drive to the sault and arrive with sore back, butt and arms and unable to carry on or return. You live in a fine area. Do a bunch of loops with increasing mileage to see how you and the bike like each other. Make what ever changes are required. I bought a bike 2000km from my home and rode it back. Those were two 700+ and one 500+ days. My butt was ok but the first thing I did after arriving was to order handlebar risers. Point being, better to get ergonomics sorted first.
On my trip while taking shelter from a lightening storm, talked to a couple who were making the same trip you are contemplating, although they started from Montreal. They were doing about 300 to 400km a day. Enjoying the trip. And if your route takes you on the north shore there is lots to enjoy.
Anyway good luck

thanks for all the good feedback.

I've put ~650 miles on my bike since I bought it and want to get to 1000 before the end of the season (fast approaching in Ottawa) ...

so I think I'll do a long trip out and back once to see how things work out. My inlaws have a cottage north of Peterborough - about 3.5 hours away, but a lot more fun if you got the roundabout 4.5 hour journey. I could go out, spend a few hours at the cottage and come back. And I can bring an overnight bag in case it's too far to go out and back in the same day.

That is - IF the weather cooperates - highs of 5-10 next week ... BRRRRRRR
