Around 1965, I was about 15, had a new Suzuki 50. I had been TOLD I could drive it with just a learners permit. Had it about 10 days. Got pulled over for no tag, by a deputy sherrif. He had no mercy, neither did the judge when mom went to talk w/him. $600 bucks was a lot of money for a first offense, tag & D.L. Course that was in the day and there was never any record of it (somebody's pocket). Ironically, my mom worked for the hiway patrol, AND I am a cop myself now. And for the record, I have never pulled over a biker. Course, some of 'em do need a ticket when they risk harming someone else. Matter fact, I got my eye on a couple you fellers!

I think I frustrated a cop yesterday :D
I headed into the city and after you get off the freeway on this one road, there is ALWAYS a speed trap! Yesterday there was a pick up behind the cop car and one in the ditch. In Alberta, if you are in an adjacent lane to an emergency vehicle you have to do a maximum of 60km/h. I wasn't sure if they had the truck pulled over or if it was just a decoy so I slowed down to 60 (posted is 70 - most people do 80 or 90). I dropped it down a gear so the bike make some noise and I could see the officer running up to the radar gun... he looked at the speed, looked up at me, and walked away in disgust! I waved. :D

I'm a fairly new rider, learned in NY with some hardcore riders, white lining like a manic, non-DOT helmet, illegal pipes, I always dress in "bad "O Ring"" attire, etc. Amazingly not pulled over yet. Some of the stuff I do on the bike I'm surprised I haven't been nailed but like I said, I rode with some hardcore people who could spot cops well over the years. A quick tap of the hand on the helmet and you know to back off whatever you're doing. I did have to stop at a road block once and knew my pipes were too loud. I saw the road block as I was going onto the parkway and just clutched in and let off the throttle to quiet the bike down and then started to break, thankfully they waved me on.

My question, though, what's the best procedures for when you get stopped while on a bike? I know in a car it's turn off the engine, even remove the keys and put them on the dash and keep your hands in sight. I'm assuming turning off the bike as well but do you stay on the bike? Get off? Put your hands to the side or keep them on the handlebars?

Jude
