I agree with Isaac that you should take some photos of the intersection. This might at least show that had the scooter been going at legal speeds, they would have been able to stop for vehicles pulling out. In our little village the speed limit is 25 all over the place, and we have nothing but blind pull outs. Lots of our villagers want their wild gardens to extend out to the road, and we have very few sidewalks on the edges of our streets. Driving (or riding) over 25 is just plain stupid when there is so much "stuff" everywhere.
Most likely, the insurance company will pay out for you (with deductible), but the scooter dude will be out of luck for being without insurance. This is why he might sue you. If that happens, have your photos available. And stay cool (which I know you can do because you're just so cool anyway!). Speak to the judge the same way you speak to us. You are more observant of bikers because you are a biker. Make sure they understand just how careful you were at that intersection. The rest is really out of your hands, so just try not to worry too much.
Glad that everyone is relatively okay. Just makes me realize how vulnerable we all can be, even when folks are lookin' out for us.
Cheers,
Loonette
