Of course this has nothing to do with me assembling a bike, a thought that occurs to me now as faintly ridiculous because I'd have to trust my life to my mechanical aptitude and I'm just not that willing to go that far.

Yet you still expect someone else to do that service for you for free?

If they derived value from it - I wouldn't expect to pay for it. It is like me offering to pay for advertising their product - say $400 worth of a radio ad - I'd say no outright.

Some of these bikes have been shown in dealers for years. Delivered years of utility to the dealer with people sitting on them and determining if they fit the bike or not.

Once they pass a fiscal year the cost of assembling the bike is already expensed on their accounting.

Assembling a bike and putting it on the showroom floor is a cost of doing business, not a service to the end purchaser - who had no choice in the matter that the bike be shipped in a smaller container and not fully assembled.

Rhadam- I think you're looking at this wrong. Let the dealer assemble the bike, that's what dealers do. Look at the OTD price- forget about the price components. Let them call it delivery, assembly, service fee, whatever..... look at the bottom line. Is it too high? Bargain with them!! Make 'em a counter-offer, show 'em the green. If they go for it, you got a deal. If they don't..... walk away.

Do your research and always have the maximum OTD price you will pay clear in your mind before you start talking to the dealer. If you can't get them down to that figure - walk away.

Probably what I didn't do with the B-King. I'm still not entirely sure how the in store price was $8500 or so and I got out of the dealer for $10,500 + delivery. After $600 for tax - and say $200 for tags... Its all WTF from there. They probably have a profit center with my name on it over there.

Anyways... I'll have to keep in mind about this next time around whenever that is.

Tell you what. Next time you buy a bike, ask them to deduct the PDI, freight and assembly costs and let me know how you make out with that.

The thing that pisses me off is that these "essential" costs should be included in the advertised price. If there is a cost to handlebars and my warranty is void without them, then they should be included in the price. If I'm not getting the bike out the door without paying for PDI and freight well then don't advertise prices for the bikes without them included fershristsakes.

ahem, two terms to be looked up. COGS (Cost Of Goods Sold) & TLC (Total Landed Costs)......after which, look up Fixed Costs and Variable Costs.

First two components in basic accounting will help in this task.
