I've been in Physical Therapy with a lot of people who have gotten full knee and hip replacements. Those that have had the full replacements tend to be doing better than people like me who have just been repaired. I'd say go with the full replacement.

Apparently they won't do a full replacement on me because I'm only 31. I'd need at least two more replacements during a normal lifespan--maybe more--and after two total hip replacements, they've removed so much bone that a third one would be very difficult if not impossible and would be wrought with dangers and badness. I'd basically be completely immobile by the time I'm 60-65.
With the decompression, they're just hoping it'll buy me another 10 years before needing a replacement. Not really the best news in the world, but at least the doc I saw this morning explained everything and answered a bunch of questions so I feel a lot better about the procedure now than I did after talking with the first doc.

they dont like to do it unless your 55. My father just had both knees replaced and they didnt want to do it because he was only 51 and not 55 but they gave in and did it anyways because he has lived with knee pain for 45 of those 51 years.Wrider wrote:Gotcha, yeah that'll do it. I hear the 50 years old thing a lot. What'd you do to screw your hip up so badly? Or is it just bad naturally?
Right now im thinking about Quakecon 2010 and wondering if my motorcycle would make it down there and back..... total cost of gas would be about $100 round trip. Figure 2 days down.... Spend 4 days at quakecon... 2 days back with a total of 8 days which means if I take a week and a half off from work plenty of time though id have a sore arse afterwards hahaha.

they don't know what caused it, it just happened. they're going to do the core decompression, which means they'll go in and drill out the middle of the bone and hope that stimulates some bone growth to buy me 10 years or so. the joint replacement specialist that i saw said that in 10 years we'd have a different conversation, two hip replacements would put me into my 70s.
i don't know, it means putting minimal weight on my leg for 6-8 weeks. i'm all set up to buy a new hammer 8 ball, but putting that on hold til i find out when they're going to do the surgery. if it's right away, i'll wait til after i recover to buy a brand new bike. if they're gonna wait a month or more, i might get it so i can have it all broken in by the time i finish recovering.
we'll have to see. i love putting my life on hold.

Wow both knees at the same time? It hurts bad enough just one at a time!ofblong wrote:they dont like to do it unless your 55. By the way, when you're doing wall-sits as a recovery thing, be careful, I know a guy that was pushing pretty hard and ended up breaking some of his vertebrae, and had to have them fused!

Be careful Jask, you'll be putting minimal weight on it for that amount of time, but you'll be recovery for a lot longer... (My accident was on September 13th, first surgery on Oct 6, and second surgery on Nov 9 and I was just able to sit on a supersport for the first time on Jan 16.)

hehe not at the exact same time but pretty close. They did one knee and then 3 months later did the other knee.Wrider wrote:Wow both knees at the same time?
