I learned to ride on a 1982 honda cm450e. I recently sold it and bought a more powerful bike. In retrospect maybe I should have stayed with the Honda. It was really nice to learn on. No one has mentioned it but I had a problem with the brakes. They did not like moisture. After it rained and I took it out, I would have to be very careful as the brakes would really grab. Other than that limited caution, the bike was a joy.

What was the difference between the CM and CB series?
I started on a CX500, also very good learner bike (and pretty low maintainance to boot)

Re: Honda CM400 Good Beginner Bike?
To be honest, I thought the only difference between the CM and CB400 models was mainly cosmetic, the CB's IIRC came with comstar wheels and disc brakes while the CM models had wire wheels and drum brakes.....okay, the brakes are a big difference. Apart from that, my CM's were more of a standard then a cruiser. Oh course the CB400 inline 4 is a whole other beastie.
Always ask why.

My 81 CM400A had the Comstar wheels with tubeless tires and also had a disc front brake with a drum rear. Not sure what year or model of the CM went from drum to disc front. My 81 CB400T was also disc front.
