license to buy a motorcycle?

#1 Unread post by kronicdecay »

I am thinking of financing a motorcycle through a good dealer close to me. The question I have is do I already have to have a Class M license to ride it off the lot? I know in order to even get a class M license I have to furnish my own motorcycle which would be hard to do if I cant get it off the lot without a license. Sorry for the dumb question but Im just used to driving my scooter and now finally taking the step into a real ride. Im wanting to try to do this tomorrow so the quicker the response on this the better Thank you for your time.

The laws will vary from state to state, I would think; in CA you don't have to have a license to buy a motorcycle, but it's still illegal to ride without at least a learner's permit. If you don't have a permit, you can always ask about having it delivered; most dealers will, for a fee.

Yeah most places you don't have to even know what lever or button does what to buy one, and can ride it off that way.

In PA you don't need a liscense to buy one. Nor do you need a motorcycle to get a liscense. You could take the MSF course and get it that way.

Sure. The dealer isn't going to check for your license before handing you your keys. That's YOUR job: To get licensed before throwing a leg over.

To the OP, let me suggest this: Take the MSF BRC before financing a new bike. You'll greatly reduce the likelihood of damage to that new machine AND you'll sidestep the "what do I do NOW?" issue, should you discover that scootering really is what you're cut out for. (Yes, it happens. I had a gentleman who already had a $30K HD in his garage when he learned that riding really was not in his skill set.)

In MN you must have a motorcycle endorsement to buy a bike. You can ride with just the learners certificate but you can’t buy without the full endorsement.

I've dealt with two dealers. Both asked for my license, one definitely checked for my endorsement.
