mileage questions for all (esp. wrider)

#1 Unread post by zeligman »

hey everyone - it's been almost a year with my 02 suz volusia 800. it seems like mileage on this bike averages 30-35. That just seems sooo low for what people generally say about gas mileage. Any suggestions? It's a little old, but not TOO bad... is it rider specific? too heavy on the accel/clutch? is it the shaft drive vs. chain? is it just the model? any help would be welcome.

thanks!

still recovering - back to crutches, then walking with a stick, then running - then hopefully riding again!

That sounds pretty low for a relatively low HP V-Twin. Pretty much all my "fullsize" bikes past and present have gotten between 40-50mpg. Out of my current bikes, the Hypermotard and the CBR gets about 42-45. The BMW gets about 40 in town but gets really good mileage on the highway...over 50mpg. The KLX gets over 60 but that is only a 250cc.

I got over 50 mpg on the 883 Sportster. I get between 30 and 40 on the V-Rod and 1125R. If you're riding hard, bouncing off the rev limiter, I think you're alright. I have no experience with your bike though.

I found that any time the tach got above the 3000 mark, (on any bike that had a tach,) the gas mileage took a major hit. Now, if I was following Blues2cruise around my mileage was always better than I normally got...

Nope that's about what I got buddy. I'm pretty heavy on the gas though. For some reason my right-side appendages seem to have had lead implanted in them. Just too much work to keep them out of the floorboard/handlebar... haha

Well, I get between 47 and 56 on the FZ6 - on regular fuel. Cuts my fuel costs in half compared to my Accord. I got 52 my last run, but I'm virtually all highway and only once in a while feel the need for speed.

Used to get 55+ on the Versys, now I get 45-50 pretty consistently.

Wow that's surprising! I wonder why that bike gets such terrible mileage.

My father has the same bike as you and it always ran pretty rough and got terrible mileage (he got it cheap because of this). As it turns out one of the hoses (can't remember which one) off of the carburator was pinched. It was a real pain to get to it, but once he did, the bike was a night and day improvement over how it previously was. It had obviously been this way since it was new.

This might be worth checking in to. His bike is roughly the same year as yours as well.

I always get 30 - 35 mph and I don;t care!
People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.
