...What exactly are they? I need to get them before my riding test on Saturday/Sunday. My friend says I could just get Timberlands and that'd work. Can anyone tell me if this is true and what exactly makes a canvas boot different from non-canvas.
Thanks!

I believe by non canvas they mean leather. Use an old pair of Army or work boots.

A good pair of boots is one of the best pieces of gear you can buy. The first time you have to stop on a slick spot and put your feet down you'll realize why Slip/oil-resistant riding boots are to die for.

I think the "non canvas" refers to Chuck Taylor high top sneakers, not necessarily boots. Any sturdy over the ankle boot should work. I think you'd have a tough time finding a boot that was made of canvas.
Most Motorcycle Safety Courses require the students to wear over the ankle footwear. Chuck Taylors being excluded because they offer essentially NO protection for the ankle bones.

I wear Timberland safety toe boots and love them. I tried Wolverines but the tread kept getting hung on the pegs. I had to lift my foot off of the peg after shifting to go into the riding position.
The Timberlands don't have a big step in the tread at the arch on the boot like the wolverines. Something you may want to look into when boot shopping.

I started out with a pair of steel toe work boots (at the time I worked at a job that required steel toes), they worked but weren't the best.
I got a pair of sidi motorcycle boots and the difference was night and day.
