Admitting they buggered up is the same thing as saying, "we can't protect you people." So they tried to cover up the mistake. Now things are going to end up even worse. Isn't life grand?
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

It's very easy to sit back after something like this happens and say, "they should have.............................."
It takes a fraction of a second to trigger an explosive, and they don't have to be big bulky things that stand out a mile away.
No such thing as a warning shot in police depts., thats only on tv.
There are lots of camera's in England, but when something occurs they have to go through the footage, it's not like they're continally watched, there are apparently far too many.

so how about they just shoot anyone then? i mean Anyone can have a bomb, it doesnt have to big and bulky like you said, anyone is suspect therefor they can have a reason to shoot anyone? you have to draw a line somewhere and not make that split second shoot or kill decissionBuelligan wrote:It's very easy to sit back after something like this happens and say, "they should have.............................."

From the cops piont of view..... things have been blowing up fairly regularly over there, the had orders to shoot suspected bombers, and no doubt they were and had been scared crappless about people blowing up in thier faces for a few weeks. They must have been very much on edge, under pressure and more than a little worried for thier jobs, thier own safetly and the publics as well. If you think the guy your stopping may be a bomber, and many bombs have been exploded in your area recently, your not going take any chances with some guy who is too scared/stupid/cocky to do as ordered when faced with a badge and a gun, your going to take no chances. Just like they did.
The world, and the West in particular, is changeing and if we can't stop terrorists from committing such atrocities, more incidents like this will follow. And blaming the cops won't change that, blaming the killers won't either. You have to stop the lowlife scum and make thier own community want to stop them before they can commit these acts. If not, then self-preservation will dictate that 'people who look like terrorists' will be assumed to be terrorists. And then won't the crying and whining start.......

Because all it takes is for a suicide bomber to get one arm free and it can be all over. The Policce shot him the same way that it would happen in Ulster, Afganistan or Iraq. At the end of the day if the Soldier/Police Officer truely believes that the suspect is a Suicide Bomber than logic dicattes their course - Mr Menezes actions were what led the Officers on the scene to believe that he was a Suicide Bomber. If Mr Menezes had been carrying a bomb then there would be no problem with the Police Officers actions and they would be being lauded in the National Press as hero's right now.
They had to make a call on the spot and did what they had to in order avoid the greatest loss of life. It sucks. For Mr Menzes family it really sucks.
The BBC has been continuing the line that Mr Menezes refused to stop when challanged.
Sir Ian Blair has on several occasions described it as a dreadful mistake.
Of the two Armed Officers present, one has been placed on administrative duties and the other sent on leave until a proper investigation can be conducted.
I doubt that we will see any camera footage of the nt until after the investigation is over. To be honest I am not sure what will be shown, I was in London on a CAFCAS protest between the two attacks and I didnt notice that many camera's on the Tube.
Todays development is that it seems Mr Menezes' student visa had expired in 2003 and a passport stmp granting him indefinate leave to stay in the UK was a forgery. If he has been living/working in the Country illegally it would explain why he ran from Police.
Armed Response usually look something like this:

Birmingham Police arrested one of the men wanted in connection with last weeks failed attack but theres some controversy because they used a Taser to take him down.
3 other men have been arrested - they are beleived to be the bombers whose weapons failed on the 21st.
Another man wanted for the attacks has been detained in Zambia.

so you pass blame that easy? what about this situation, a drunk driver runs off the road hits a telephone pole causes a Huge scene. a passer by is rubber necking and in turn hits a kid riding his bike and kills him. is the kid a victim of the drunk driver or the idiot who wasnt paying attention?Joe Mc wrote:The way I see it the Brazilian fellow was a victim of terrorism, not shoddy policing.

You are trying to confuse the issue by using a completely different example.
Heres the deal. A man in a sensative area behaved like a terrorist. The Police took affirmative action to prevent widescale loss of life similar to what we saw in London a couple of weeks ago.
The tradgedy is that the man was innocent of everything except being in the Country illegally.
If he had been a terrorist with a bomb the Officers in question would be being lauded in the press as National Hero's for putting their lives on the line, preventing more loss of life and we wouldnt be having this discussion.
The same day this happened Armed Response detained a man outside Downing Street who had also been behaving suspiciously. He complied with their instructions and they didnt shoot him. After they were satisfied he wasnt a threat they allowed him to go.
I still havent seen an answer on how many accidental shootings there are by Police Officers in the US.[/i][/b]
