New Bike (again)

#1 Unread post by NorthernPete »

Well, Getting irritated with the rebuild of my 83 Seca, I decided to see if there were some parts on the local online bullitan board. and lo and behold, I see something which catches my eye. a 1983 Maxim 650. It has apperently been sitting in the guys shed for the last 5 years. so on Monday it will be sitting in my shed. hopefully Ill have some better luck with this bike seeing as it hasnt been stripped. all for 200 bucks. cant really go wrong. (when this one becomes a money pit, Ill let you know.) Any thoughts on this bike? once again, if its running, itll be my starter bike. and Im still working on the Seca, so im not giving up on either.

Sounds okay to me...but don't give up, that Seca is very cool! Kudos on the work so far, BTW. Just keep plugging away at it. It will be even more special once it's right. That's what Chris is finding about his Hurricane. The fixing process really connects you to the machine somehow. Good luck, Pete!

Oh for sure, I wouldnt dream of giving up on my Seca, Its got character and I have actually gotten to ride it (before I had the forks off) so the way I hoping things turn out, I'll have two perfectly servicable bikes that I have worked on with my own two hands.. I feel itll give me more of a sense of accomplishment when I look at the finished results, even if the journey was....memorable *lol*

Congratulations! Also, welcome to the end of life as you know it. I know mine has never been the same since my two little accidents. :D But I wouldn't change it for the world.

I used to have a 650 Midnight Maxim, not sure of the exact year but it was a mid-80's model, and I really enjoyed it. It was my second streetbike, the first being a 77' GS 550 Suzuki which weighed a ton, so this bike was a nice upgrade. It was the all black w/gold trim...looked pretty cool with the cafe style headlight cowl and drag bars I put on it. :D

Well, drove an hour north today and picked up the Maxim. Seems in pretty decent shape. myself and a buddy got it home and I allready have the carbs stripped off and the gas tank and seat pulled off (gas tank still had fuel in it, and some rattly things which I have no idea what they are, they are out now) anyways, the bike has some cosmetic things to be done, need a battery, battery cover, new tires, front signal lights and a carb cleaning (which is underway) so tommorrow Im going to call up my scrap yard and get some parts on the way (including my fork bracket for the seca. looks like the last peice for it. so hopefuly itll be on the road soon) I did like the way it felt sitting on the maxim though, low to the ground and very comfy. also has a sissy bar on the back. Ill put up some photos when I get the bike back togther.

One other thing. the tank and side covers are currently painted white, which is peeling off (looks like a re coat) Im trying to think of a colour to paint it. any suggestions? I was thinking maybe a candy apple red. or black. any feed back?

All Maxims should be either bright red or midnight blue. LoL
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
