BB's are little metal pellets, similar to leadshot used for shotguns... but obviously not made of lead. Other options include replacing the grips and modding the bars to insert end weights, or the rubber damper mentioned above.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
