Feeler gauges - what should I look for in one?

Hi,

I need a set of feeler gauges so that I can keep my valves in spec but I don't know what type to get. What should I look out for? I went on Ebay and did a search and I found all sorts - from simple key-chain types with a few blades to those with 32 blades. As I'll be mail-ordering them, and thus won't be able to exchange them, I want to make sure I get a suitable set. Something that's sufficient, but not an overkill.

Do you not have an auto parts store anywhere nearby? They always carry common automotive tools like feeler gauges, so you shouldn't need to mail order them.

Anyway, you need to know what tolerances your valves work in before selecting a set. If you're only going to use them for valve work then it's not much sense to buy the full 32 blade set if you'll only need two or three sizes. You can get by with a 10 blade kit if the sizes fall withing the range you need. For example, if your valves require a 0.07mm intake and 0.08mm exhaust you can get a set that has a 0.01 - 1.00mm range.

Motion Pro makes feeler gauges specifically for motorcycle valve adjustment--they are angled to get in tight places--once again no info on what kind of bike you have--if you have 4 valve head you will need 2 gauges of the same size for the intake and exhaust if the settings are different.
