Brackstone's -My first motorcycle will be 600cc MIA List-

#1 Unread post by Brackstone »

If it's alright with everyone I wanted to start this list. The reason being is I think there are too many people that come in here say they are going to buy a 600cc motorcycle as their first bike, justify the hell out of why they NEED that bike, why they can HANDLE it, and/or why they know better than everyone else here.

I wanted to call the thread 600cc First Bike Graveyard but I figured that would be too morbid. If the mods deem even this is morbid I won't pursue it.

I plan to keep a record of every new person that comes in in springtime, says the aforementioned statements and then check to see if they are still with us next year. Sure maybe they didn't come back because they are too cool for us. The possibility will exist that they got hurt, or hurt their bike, or worse. I think it would be nice to have some statistics (but that may just also be my geeky side).

The purpose would be to serve as a warning to all the newbies that come in here and talk about how everyone they know "did it" and "is totally fine".

So anyway I wanted to get the thoughts of not only the mods, but the community as well, about my thread idea.

Does it have to be just 600cc race replica sportbikes? Or can it be any bike that's too big/too powerful for a noob?

I remember, a couple of years ago, a noob bought one of the Triumph 800cc cruisers (Bonneville America or Speedmaster) at our local dealership. It was too much bike for him, as he proceeded to 1) dump it in the parking lot, then 2) run it into the ditch across the road. We were all wincing, not just because of him hurting himself (he actually didn't) but because it was much too pretty a bike to get all trashed like that.

I don't see what the point of the thread is. Have you ever ridden a 600 sportbike before?

Sorry yeah it should be all inclusive I was just using that as an example as that seems to be most prevalent, but I wouldn't limit it to anything. I could change the title too but I figured this would grab the most attention.

If you actually get some time in on a 600cc sportbike, you will realize it is far from the dangerous first bike that it is made out to be. No I don't recommend it as a first bike but in many ways it is far better than many other bikes that are considered better choices such as the SV650, Monster 696, etc.

There are plenty of guys that start out on CBR600RR on the CBR site and they keep their bike and remain members year after year.

Clearly the guy didn't know how to ride and had he been on a Honda Rebel 250, he probably would have done the same.

Turns out he was fresh out of the MSF course, and did OK on the Rebel or GZ250 or whatever they were using. His friend ended up riding the Triumph home for him, which should have been their plan from the get-go.

Good to hear the bike survived its idiot owner's incompetence. :ninja:
