When it is time to stop, I use everything I have, engine, front, and back brakes (sometimes prayer).
I think it is kinda like drinking water when you are stranded in the desert, experts say to drink all your water quickly. Some people have been found dead with water in their canteens. Stop while the stopping is good.

Id have to say I use engine braking more then the brakes. Use the brakes to let people know Im stopping. This is mostly from the experience of older bikes which dont have as good of brakes as the new ones. I only started using a front brake a few years ago when I got a bike that had one that actually did something when you pulled the lever.
I use engine braking in maneuvers and mellow stops. However, in any kind of emergency I pull the clutch in. My front brakes are enormous, and I don't want any input from the back wheel. I'll feather the rear brake, tho.
