I never said they are free to come and take them, I just wouldn't gun them down if they tried. I take plenty good care of my stuff, just that if it comes down to it, it's not worth taking a life for. Some people love their stuff more than others I suppose.

I have a dog... and I worked like one too to get a house in a decent neighborhood. Not exclusive mind you, but decent enough. I have top of the line deadbolts and an alarm system and security lights. And a cell phone. And neighborhood watch. And a buttload of cops just down the street. And an excellent homeowner's policy complete with a video, serial numbers and vehicle titles in a safe deposit box. Somehow I'm keeping up with all my worldly possessions without a gun for forty years and counting. It's a wonder my passive self isn't robbed every second, me not having a gun and all... But don't you worry about me. I'm unarmed, but I'm sure I can muddle through somehow...

That is a very bizarre dichotomy to me given that their chances for having a bike accident are far greater statistically than being shot by a stranger. There's no law that we have to use logic I suppose.
I am raising three small children by myself in 2005, cb360, that's all you need to know. I go helmetless for pleasure, and I pack heat because of all the child-molestors I hear about on the news these days. A gun is a tool, just like any other, and I want to have the right tool for the job should "the job" ever come knockin' uninvited.
Actually it's not always some stranger that you have to worry about. Most cases of child molestation involve either family members (not saying you would) or friends of the family. One day your kid spends the day at a friends house (yours or theirs) and they'll come and never be the same. Or a night out on the town will get them molested because you hired the wrong baby sitter, or took them to the wrong daycare. And nothing you can do, no "O Ring" you kick, and no one you shoot will ever change them back. You wouldn't even be protecting them anymore, you'd just be getting revenge to make yourself feel better.

In the rare cases where it is a stranger who does the molestation it is typically an abduction of an unattended child. You could have a tank, with the best gunnery crew in the world, but if you aren't watching all the time some one could just walk away with one of your little kids. The problem is that media sensationalizes things like child abduction because it's "good news." It gets people watching. How often do you see a bike crash on the TV compared to a car crash... We all know car crashes are more common.

So you carry a weapon to shoot your kid's friend's parents? Or do you carry it to shoot the person that you don't see, because you aren't looking for one second (that's all it takes) when he or she grabs your child? I can say I'm genuinely confused.

Wait, I think I get it. You don't wear a helmet because a crash is unlikely, and you enjoy not having it. All those news stories about bikers being killed because of massive brain damage caused by blunt force tramau that could have been prevented with a helmet is just media hype. But the sexual assaults on minors... that is downplayed by the media. There are millions of child molesters out there on every corner waiting for you to blink so they can grab your kid? You need to carry a gun to scare them off.

As to not wearing a helmet because as you're so fond of saying, "it feels good." Who is going to take care of your kids in the unlikely event that you bite the big one? Through no fault of your own of course, some idiot car changes lanes into you... whatever. You're in a coma, who watches the kids? Come to think of it, who takes care of your kids during your epic 12 hour, no stop rides?

They already do...illegally...that's what makes them bad guys.
Only the criminals who have been caughts cannot legally get a concealed carry permit. The ones who haven't probably have one if they are smart... I mean they've gotten away with everything they've done so far, why wouldn't they be smart enough to make sure the gun they carry is legal? Or is it just that only good, honest people are smart?
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Besides your personal vendetta against me because I used a slang form of the word "stupid", what's the connection between having a gun sitting on top of my armoir and not wearing a helmet??? We have no helmet laws in Ohio...so it's legal for me to go without...so let this one go, it's a personal choice. I happen to have two nice full-faced helmets, but A) I get hotter than hell wearing them, and B) they completely block my peripheral vision. I would like to get an open-faced helmet sooner or later, but haven't found one yet that doesn't look ga.....err.....I mean.....stupid.

As for the gun, I feel better owning one. Case closed. If someone decides to come waltzing into this apartment for any reason, whether it be to rob me, kill me, or abduct my kids, they're getting shot...period. Don't like guns? Don't carry one. But don't try to make me look inconsistent or stupid in a public forum for not wearing a helmet yet owning a gun. Why not take it further and ask why I ride in the first place? Motorcycles are inherently dangerous. The difference between you and I is, I know where I'm going when I die and you obviously do not. I trust the good Lord will call me home when it's my time, and no sooner.

It's not even a matter of my constitutional right to bear arms, he's just going out of his way to try and make a fool out of me. But, using his logic, if I'm willing to risk making my kids orphans by not wearing a helmet, then I should also allow criminals to come and go as they please in my apartment and do as they wish with them. It's the same reasoning if you think about it, that I ride helmetless yet own a gun for protection. The biggest difference, though, that he's overlooking is that the kids do not go with me when I ride, but they ARE with me in this apartment. My risky behavior on the bike does not directly endanger their lives, but where I choose to live and how I choose to protect my dwelling certainly does.

I also really love the way he asked who the kids were with during my 13-hour ride a few weeks back...like I just leave 'em tied to the sofa with a big @ss bowl of animal crackers and a big @ss bowl of water next to 'em. Perhaps I used the same services that I use whilst at work or attending classes...a freakin' babysitter...or maybe even...oh, I dunno...their mother had them for the weekend... :frusty:

well you must remember this is coming from a guy who doesnt have kids first of all. also from a very safety aware person who doesnt think theres a need to lock his windows or doors. makes no sense to me to be so safety conscious then dotn care about locking your doors.

also hes told me a few times if you dont wear a helmet you should be left to die if you are in an accident no matter if its your fault or not. soon as that was said i stopped paying attention really, theres no point.

This is beginning to degenerate into personal attacks...and it shouldn't. :?

By the way, for the record - I don't own a handgun. I've owned several in the past though, and have no problem with someone who chooses to carry as long as they are responsible about it.

I do own two rifles, and coincidently I went to the range this evening after work for some targeting. As for home defense, neither of my rifles are kept loaded or quickly accessible, because I have a five-year-old son. What my dog's teeth can't handle, my hands and feet will have to suffice for.

Besides, one of the rifles would put a bullet through the assailant, several walls and a few neighbor houses before it stopped. The other one is a .22 and "inadequate for defense."

And I only asked about your kids cause I'm not convinced you have any. Sorry :(

Everything being discussed here are matters of freedom of personal choice . If you don't like my choices that's OK with me . However , you will not mandate your personal choice for me . I wear a helmet because the law says I must . I rode for more years than some of you have been alive without one . Helmets and the wearing thereof have absolutely nothing to do with gun ownership . Anymore than Peanut butter and lawn mowers have any thing in common .
Nuff said .
