Just came back from a ride and I tried pulling the choke out when it was revving a little high and it still seemed to smooth out the engine. I'll try the sea foam and see if that improves the performance.

I've been riding daily with an occasional day off due to rain if that's what you mean. It's not fresh out of the garage after a long winter's nap. If you're asking if I'm having the problem at the beginning of a ride, the bike is well warmed up when I noticed the difference between the choke/no choke performance.
The carb probably needs to be cleaned. It is not a severe case of clogged up internals as if it was, it would literally need the choke to even stay running. You may be able to get away with running some carb cleaner or seafoam without taking the carb apart and cleaning it.

Ok, so after riding a couple hundred miles with sea foam in the tank, I'd say that there's no improvement. I'm ready to replace the plug, I think it might be the original, 7400 miles on the bike. Should the plug wire be replaced also?

FYI, I found a work order for the bike that took place April that states that the carb was checked for cleaning and that they found that it wasn't necessary to clean.

If you have been riding with the choke on the plugs are probably fouled. Does it look black and sooty or wet with unburnt fuel saturated on it?

I replaced the plug and it's running a little better. I've only gone a couple miles but there's improvement in the performance. The plug I replaced looked ok to my untrained eye. It doesn't look black and sooty or wet with unburnt fuel saturated on it. It's a light gray and dry as can be.

Had a good 50 mile ride and I'm convinced it's much better. Thank you all for your help.
