It is possible they did screw up an ignition coil, but usually when they go out they go out immediately. And yes they're talking about the stick coils, those ones are really nice to work with because they go right onto the top of the spark plug and you don't have to worry about plug wires.
The good thing about stick coils is that you only have to replace one at a time, you don't have to do all 4.
First thing I'd have them check though is that the plugs are properly tightened, it sounds like a plug could have come loose, which would cause the same symptoms and seem as though a coil went bad.
