Your absolutely right. But I also want to spend my money wisely. If i can get a similar performing helmet for $100 less I would opt to get the less expensive one. You need to visit the local stores to try on the different brands. Different brands fit differently and the proper fit is critical.

Is one brand better that the other with regards to safety and comfort. Is safety the same as long as it is DOT and Snell approved and is comfort based on personal preference. Your welcome to jump on this thread anytime...I promise I will learn from your questions/answers! Any of you folks familiar with the Aprilia Pegaso? Found one locally for under $3,000 and under 7,000 miles and with panniers. This is cheaper than similar KLRs and DRs out here.
One more question...what about using a DR350 for a couple of years? There is a kick-starter one here in GREAT shape for under $1000... Figured it would be a cheap investment to learn on a lighter bike, but is it highway capable for me?

Highway is the ability to maintain 60mph for a long period of time... Want to try elk hunting about four hours north of me....
Update... I have just secured $3,000 to purchase the bike. My head is spinning trying to decide which route to take. That Pegaso looks sweet and is $2950. Found a '91 DR350 for $900 in great shape. There are late model, electric start DR350 around here for around $1700. Need ideas folks...suggestions...and some good old common sense to help me out.

Well gotta be honest with you and tell you the 350 either won't or will have a very hard time maintaining 60 MPH, especially with a rider in gear and a gun/bow on them.
As far as the Pegaso, I'd never heard of it until now, which means it's fairly rare. It seems to be a pretty cool bike, but the problem is with it being so rare, finding parts for it is going to be hard and expensive.
I'm still saying the DR650, I have a friend who regularly takes his rifles out shooting on his, and I've been to 80 on it without a problem, yet it's still more than capable of handling fire roads. The other you might want to look at is a Honda XL600 or XR650. Both are more dirt oriented than street, but I've also had a 650 up to *edited to not go to jail* MPH before. I was pretty much able to keep up with a very hot-rodded Harley Soft-tail and a GSX-R1000 being ridden in a fun manner up the twisties.

I am up here in Moscow, ID...northern Idaho. There is a 1998 DR650 w/ 5400 miles, original owner, new tires and battery for $1750 obo that I will be definitely checking out.

I would lean more towards the air cooled bikes if you are going to be doing any offroad excursions...no rad to crack, no coolant lines to rip off or tear...it's just more likely to survive a WHOOPS in the woods...
