Congrats, you sound as if you are still on that adrenalin high and that can be a good thing, it keeps you sharp but you have to learn to relax and then you will become one with the bike. try not to be too tense when you ride, just enjoy the rush. As for the gear changing, do not rush it this is something you need to feel. It will come.
I spent my therapy money an a K1200S
The therapy worked, I got a GS now
A touch of insanity crept back in the shape of an R1200R

take it slow
I was right where you are almost a year ago.
the thing I found out is you learn something on almost every trip you take if you are open to it.
May sound a bit much to some but I keep a log of sorts of the things I learned / almost mistakes - like not looking for potholes one trip to taking a unknown corner a little too fast not thinking there may be gravel lurking around that corner.
An experienced biker guy told me he goes through the same thing with each new bike he gets. He tries to go out and have a "perfect" ride. He doesn't start out that way but eventually he gets closer to it.
I bought the crusier, but I had my eye on the vstrom too. It would be enough to cause me to have MBS multiple bike syndrome. Hi my name is Doggyboy and I have MBS.
Take care
be very careful out there!
