I can stay in 2nd until about 3000rpm if i go very gently, but if i rip on it then it slips out right away. Is there any way for me to fix this myself or should I let a mechanic take a look at it? I'd be so much happier if I could do it myself and then brag about it, but is it something an amateur could tackle? Also, what exactly do you all think is wrong with it? I've been riding it going straight from 1st to 3rd this whole time but there have been times (like in a parking lot) where i'd rather not have to ride the clutch and be in 3rd or revving high in 1st.
Thanks:)

Hello and welcome to the forum. Have you changed the oil? Including the oil filter. If you did what kind of oil did you use?
People say I'm stupid and apathetic. I don't know what that means, and I don't care.

Bad gear probably. If you are an amateur mechanic, I would suggest that you leave the repair to a pro. There are alot of parts, gears/washers/bushings, etc in a transmission, and one piece put in there wrong will hose the whole deal. Kinda sux, cuz I don't think that the bike is worth the price of the repair (but you never know.) Sounds like it was subjected to some squidley activities in a previous life (?)

Re: 2nd gear slips out
I changed the oil with Castrol 10W40 and changed the filter too. The manual suggested 10W30 but the guy at the counter said 10W40 would be good enough since 10W30 only came in synthetic thus would have cost me an extra $40 for the amount I needed. Maybe I could try and find a friend who knows what their doing with bike transmissions. Do you know how much the repair usually costs in general from a repair shop?

Sounds to me like a bent shift fork or bad gear dogs. Either way not a job for an amateur by any means, especially as those don't have cassette transmissions IIRC.
If it's one of those two, then quite honestly the bike is not worth the cost of repair, and the easiest thing to do is keep riding it like you have been.
