I'm an organ donor, but while an accident on a motorcycle is statistically more likely to be fatal than in a car, the severe trauma is often enough to rule out organ donation.

I had a similar thing happen to me regarding travels and blood donation. I'm O- so it pains me to not be able to give blood anymore.

Gosh! Are you a "living donor"? I'm guessing....maybe a kidney for a close relative? If so hat's off to you!

re severe trauma - yes you are correct motorcycle accidents do sometimes unfortunately result in severe trauma, however for that very reason a victim is more likely to end up (& on life support) in intensive care which is a fundemental requirement pre donation. Also whilst not true for all of us a lot of bikers are young & fit, which means they haven't had time to ruin their organs quite as much as some of us older folks have.

Statistically 50+% of motorcycle fatalities in the US have drug involvement which rules out organ donation on its own. 80+% of motorcycle fatalities have such extensive trauma that no organ is viable for transplantation. So it's a nice thought, but rarely works out the way you'd like it to in the end.

But that's missing the point. The victim has to be "alive" to be a donor, ie have at least made it to hospital & into ITU. Out of interest what's the source of you statistics?

Department of internal medicine at Inova in Fairfax va has been tracking this information across three states for 10 years. I can't recall who their partner is on the transportation side.
