a used porsche 944?

i was looking around and saw a used porsche 944 for sale, kicking around the idea of picking it up just to screw around with. seems like its in good shape excpet a bad clutch. ive read up a little it seems the clutch is a royal pain to do... but like i said it would be a project just to learn and screw arond on. the guy wants 2500 for it, i wouldnt pay more than 1800 though maybe less if i thought about Actually buying it.

anyone have any experience with porsches, would i be bitting off more than i could handle with a project like this? the parts for the clutch seem to be about 800$. this is all of course assuming that the clutch is the only real problem with it.

i just think it looks wicked, and be cool to drive a porsche

944's actually a great car, but the parts will come at a premium as you've already noticed.

I used to work in a BMW/Mercedes/Porsche junkyard, and we would fix up cars alot of times and resell them. Porshes were the most expensive to get running, but when they did they were the most fun to drive!!!

But for example, a fuel distrubutor cap for a 928 (8 cyl porsche) wound up being something like $900 when a similar Volkswagen/audi part was only $300. If you are ready to pay for the image, I say go for it - but learn which parts can be substituted w/ vw parts ... there are actually quite a few on the water cooled models - you'll thank yourself.

yea thats my main worry is parts are going to cost a fortune, i just was googling now about the clutch. if thats all it needs id be ok with that, but later when something stupid breaks i dont want to fork out 1000$ to keep it runnning every few months. are they reliable at least not in need of constant work?

on a budget should i deffinetly stay away and start with something more common(like my current supra) as a learning project car?

that thing just looks so sweet and im sure back in its day it was top of the line performance.

I considered a 944 before I bought my Saab 900 turbo but found it very difficult to find one at a decent price that wasn't bagged. The NA ones aren't really that quick. Get a turbo!

yea i was reading about the power of the n/a. seems they arent powerfull at all i was a little surprised. but i guess they are all about handling not high speeds. my supra would probally eat the 944 in 0-60mph.

If you are interested in 0-60 times, stick w/ your bike

Seriously, if you want a nice cruisin car the 944 is sweet. But the price may not be worth it for you ... You'd probably be better off with a nice old hunk of american rwd iron for a joyrider.

i was thinking about a muscle car. an old camero or something along those lines are cheap from what ive seen and can be built up to major power. but they dont have anywhear near the handling of the 944 im sure. thats my biggest draw to the 944, supposed to handle like its on rails. my supra is rear heavy(and over all Heavy) so it handle poor(ive spun out a few times taking turns) but it loves 0-60 drag runs, my bike of course beats everything. but i think i need a good handling 4 wheel vehicle. i dunno i do appreciate all the info, i guess ill wait and see how low the guy is willing to sell it and decide then further

well after asking around seems like this 944 wouldnt be that great of a deal, everyone says theres no way theyd attempted a clutch replace job as their first big project so id likely be in over my head ha. the lowest the seller would go was 2000$ also, which from what ive been told is too much for an 83 with a bad clutch so im passing on this one. might go back to my muscle car plan... sure woulda been sweep railing a porsche around turns at high speeds for under 3grand though
