Try before you buy...
I've never ridden an 883 - only rode one with a 1200 kit installed, and I liked it plenty. Your insurance should be able to give you free quotes. Zoo's got one thing right though - the Honda will outperform the 883, but if you aren't into performance numbers, then just ride 'em and see which you like better. I'd be willing to bet that the 883 gets better miles per gallon, but if the Honda has Fuel Injection, I would choose it for that reason alone.
As for the differences between the 883 models, I think the custom has a bigger fuel tank which could be important to you if you are planning on doing some serious riding.

Staying under 1000 cc, I presume?
That means the Honda you mention is the 750 version, which has a little lower MSRP than the HD.
As has been pointed out, try before you ride. I've sat on Honda V-twins and the HD's of my neighbor, and the smoothness difference is amazing. If you like the vibration (some folks really do) and the HD name, then go for it. If you want a smoother riding bike then the Honda would be my recommendation. You just gotta see which one fits you better and which one speaks to you louder.
Find a good used one 2-3 years old, that should drop the insurance a bit more. A quick call to an insurance agent will answer all your insurance questions... it helps if you have a VIN number for them to plug in to their system, too.

Re: Sportster 883 ??
Need to know how much riding you've done, and on WHAT? That will help dictate what is recommended.ocelot wrote:Hello im a new rider who is in limbo with perchassing a hd sportster 883 my debate is is it big enuf for me im 225lbs 510" and also whats the diference between the custom 883 and how much dif in price is there alot. Choosing is so hard also was looking at the special edition 2005 shadow spirit with the flames very nice hard to choose please help. Also will my insurance go up because its a harley vs the shadow.
If you haven't spent any time on the road at all then I'm gonna recommend that you save the HD for your second bike and go find a used UJM to ride for a season or so. It will make taking a leap to the sportster or shadow spirit easier and less stressful as well. (Besides, unless you MANGLE the learner bike, you'll be able to sell it for about what you paid).
Insuring a USED motorcycle is far cheaper than a new one.

I am new rider in terms of street riding i am taking the coarse and i do drive a 400 dirtbike yamaha 4 stroke. I am not worried about dropping i practise alot on a friends c50 suzuki and i have no problems starting and stoping. My ?? that concerns me is an 883 big enuf i want to be able to achive 120 kms for triops and if the 883 aint going to do those speeds i got to look at the 1200 and my bloddy insurance is mentally challenged to begin with. Im a first time rider i got a quote on the 750 shadow its 1100 can a year for full insurence.
well all issues aside of starting on a big bike let alone a brand new expensive HD.
ive seen many people say the extra money to go from the 883 to the 1200. the 883 is supposed to be very under powered(all well and good for a beginner). but if your looking for power another bike would be better for you.
