Repair Shop question

Recently got my first bike and it is due for a 3K service. I called several different shops about getting this work done and they all said to bring it in on a Monday and it would be ready by Friday. Is this typical of bike repair shops? Is this why so many folks tend to do bike maintenance themselves?

That ... and it costs a bomb. Dealers are always fussy about the timing, take way too long.
