I don't see why you couldn't do that even if it's not made with that in mind. I think it's main purpose is to keep the map dry and from blowing away.

One thing to be careful of with any tank bag. If you ever set the bag on the ground with the magnet pads out, it may pick up small magnetic rocks that can scratch your tank. Be sure to clean them off before putting it on the bike. Or don't ever set the bag in the dirt.
