My 2003 Harley 883 just started to run rough, it will idle fine but coughs and chokes (and backfires some) upon acceleration. I changed the spark plugs and gas with no improvement. It runs ok one time and really rough the next. I am wondering if there is a fuel filter hidden somewhere or something else I could try. I tried this same question on a Harley site and recieved alot of insults (about owning an 883) and alot of suggestions to buy a manual (which is on the way) but thought I would try here and see what comes up.
Thank You
Jim

Sounds like you might be leaned out ...
I don't have a manual or a diagram even for your bike. Check the usual suspects, but wait til you get your manual to rip into anything. It's possible you got some bad gas and its blocking a filter (Maybe a mesh filter inside the tank?) unless you completely drained and washed out the tank, there's a possibility of still having some junk in there.
If you give a little detail as to what exactly is going on (how when what operating tempsw, what throttle positions) and what you have already done to try and fix the situation, it might be a little easier to help you.

I'd say you were at the wrong Harley site. There are some who ride the bigger bikes that will deride you for owning an 883. They call it a girls bike, however most any of them will tell you in the next breath how much easier it is to ride the larger models because the sportster has a higher center of gravity etc etc. I always wondered if they ever bothered to listen to themselves as they talk. Are they saying that girls are better riders because they ride (or should be riding) a bike that is more difficult to ride?
Try this site for help. http://www.harleychatgroup.com/index.php?name=Forums There are some really knowledgable people there. down the list of topics (about half way down) you will find one devoted to sportsters.
Most that frequent there seem okay to me, and more than willing to help.
