Which magazine do you get? like, etc.?

I occasionally pick up a motorcycle magazine off the newsstand - it's been real hit and miss. Cycle World was ok, American Iron was moderately interesting. I'm wondering what mags you guys get and why you like them. I'm not into off-road or racing at all. I do like magazines with industry news and feature articles like ride stories and stuff like that. But I'd like to hear what you like too. Any suggestions?

I subscribe to Motorcyclist. They changed the format the next month, and continue to tweak it still. Unfortunately, you can really see the impact of lost helmet advertizing since the article on helmet testing came out. This month was just over 100 pages, and pretty thin on content other than testing. On the plus side, they do take real world people into account, and really seem to like standards these days. I subscribed so a kid a church could sell for a school fundraiser, so I have a two year subscription. I like cycle world a little better, frankly.

I used to subscribe to Cycle World, Motorcyclist, Motorcycle Consumer News [US version], and Rider. I've dropped them all except for Cycle world, mostly because I'm not buying new bikes and gear anymore. Motorcyclist went first because Gordon Jennings died in 2000 and John Burns did something to get himself fired, Rider changed their format so it looked like more of a picture publication with less written content, and MCN is just plain expensive, but is the best of any general motorcycle publication published in America, IMO. Cycle world has its limitations, but still tells about new models and gear, and actually publishes top speeds. Motorcyclist doesn't, nor does Rider. I used to take Sportrider, which is a good one if you are really into sportbikes. They have a website with performance numbers for sportbikes, too. sportrider.com

I prefer any of a number of British bike magazines. Their reviews seem to be more honest and can be blunt (i.e. calling a spade a spade). American rags are prone to being PC with their advertisers and hence their reviews can be wishy washy. Just my personal opinion though.

i formerly got motorcyclist and cycle world--i quit both because of sportbike shootouts every month and some of that homemade chopper junk where you can have a one of a kind for $140,000.00 one issue of motorcyclist had 42 consecutive pages of advertisement at christmas time.

Any particular British mags you prefer.

And thanks oldnslo - I remember my MSF instructor talking about MCN - sounds like something I'd like. I don't currently get any magazines at all so I think I can justify $41.

I have subscribed to Cycle World, Motorcyclist, Rider, and MCN for a number of years now but have just dropped MCN. August 05 was my last issue. Their comparo of the GS500 and the Ninja 500 last year left me wondering if they know anything about motorcycles. Don't even know the difference between radial and bias ply tires. Gas milage figures for example were so far off that in the many months after that comparo when I was still getting MCN and comparing some mid sized cruisers and started comparing milage figures, I just couldn't believe them. Of the three I still take, I think I prefer Cycle World best.

I don't subscribe to any particular British mags (too cheap). Instead, I go to the local magazine shop and read what is there and buy when something interesting pops up.
