advice on a first bike

okay ill admit im new to this and ive been reading about these bikes for two years now. But i need some words of advice from you experienced " Bikers "
what should i look for ?
should i buy a beater bike to begin with ?
taking a course is imperitive..
bike model make
helmet ?

any info would be nice

Read this forum first it's where we compiled all the beginner stuff.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

I think it would be better to get a newer bike, they are lighter in weight and more dependable. You can get a new starter bike for around $3000.00 and they make them in cruiser and sportbike styles.
