I'm Three thousand miles away so I sent money. Plenty of my family in South Alabama are helping hands-on... or trying to clean up their own problem. Not anywhere near as bad down in Gulf Shores & Mobile, AL but bad enough. I agree that there's lots of policy decisions down the road for the status of New Orleans - this could very well happen again. But the time to address those concerns is AFTER the current residents are safe. You should be down there helping them.

I'm not that much of a jerk, really:)
I do hope that the rescue effort can continue, and I think the national guard will get things together don there. Lets hope so.

I just saw on cnn that a big convoy of trucks just arrived with food and water. Hopefully they'll have everyone out in a day or three. As for rebuilding and improving the levees, etc. I reckon we're looking at years there. They need to bring in some dutch engineers - I guess they don't have hurricanes but they do build some damn nice levees that have lasted for hundreds of years.

You're probably right about that. But New Orleans has some natural environment defenses and water breaks the dutch don't have. Still, their levee system is amazing and they don't skimp on it at all. They have a 100 year plan and even factor in worst-cas global warming scenarios. They've lived below sea level a lot longer than N.O has and I think we could learn a lot from them.

Billions will be spent rebuilding N.O.and the residents, 67% of which are black, will come back there to live behind inferior seawalls and dikes, and eventually this will happen again, and residents will expect the world to drop everything and rescue everyone today, right now, and why did this happen to them, and it all could be prevented by declaring the area an unlivable area, something like a swamp, let the lake and gulf saturate the land, and all the residents move to Texas or Oklahoma.

I'm sure that was a very thorough and controlled study they did. I mean they are a radio station after all and they've had three days to study the completely inaccessible city with no phone lines. Not that I don't want you to have one, but you may be ignoring the fact that people with guns were also a big part of the problems they are having down there. Not to turn this into a gun discussion... I've had plenty of those and I do support the right to bear arms I just don't choose to carry one. Besides, violence is an extremely small part of the overall issue down there. The media will of course focus on it, but the real issues are food, water, access, and most of all, poor planning at the local and federal levels that we've ignored for decades. People say let them leave, and that's fine with me, but those same people usually haven't considered the importance of that port's geography and the fact that it is the largest port by tonnage in the entire country. Give up Mardi Gras - fine with me. Give up on the people's homes - whatever. But if you think the fed govt. is gonna give up that port you are absolutely nuts. It wouldn't happen if there was another hurricane tomorrow and another one the next day. Forget about the fact that almost 20% of our fuel comes from there... it's the fifth largest port in the world. Expecting us to give up on it only betrays your own ignorance.

it's a pretty big radio station--WSB 750 AM 750,000 watts.
they even have their fleet of choppers down there so they dont have to get their info from some bozo on a cell phone.and how dare you suggest doing away with mardi gras.what will the muggers and pickpockets do to survive if that is taken away??not to mention the dope salesmen.
