general vehicle insurance question

#1 Unread post by iwannadie »

ok im due to renew my policy(progressive) and wanted to see what some people here think.

first when you turn 25 does your insurance really drop, is that a universal rule or just some companys? my policy needs renewed a few days before my birthday, should i wait the few days(not drive) and renew once i turn 25?

second is the Single Limit coverage better than splitting it? seems to me having 500,000$ to be used as needed is Way better than coverage being split. if i have 250medical and 250property that wont help me if i need it all used for medical. is there any down side to the singe limit coverage, it seems to good to be true almost compared to splitting coverage. unless im missing something.

also i went like 6 months with no insurance(had no vehicle) should i say i had no insurance when they ask or just say i was always covered? i was infact always covered while i Had a vehicle, they cant expect me to have insurance for 6 months and no vehicle right?

1st - don't let your policy lapse. you will have to pay another initiation or startup fee if you do that. Just call them when you turn 25 and they should pro-rate or discount your policy.

2nd - coverage is a matter of preference. The way I see it, if you need 250,000 worth of medical coverage there's about a 99% chance you will be needing property coverage too.

3rd - Just be honest with them, if you went without ins. because you didn't have a car that's perfectly understandable.

ok 1 i never paid an initial startup cost or fee of any kind that i know of. i use progressive and they are changing alot, i did a quote just now and can get better coverage for half the price. so i dont want to really renew my policy then call to pro rate my premium. id rather let my policy expire wait 4 days then sign up for a new policy.

2nd, if i hit a crappy car full of people their medical will be way more than the cars value.... or if i hit one person in an expensive SUV the property will be way more than the one persons medical.

3... i might try that, but im worried something in the paper work will say if you go without insurance for any reason they can raise your premium.

In NJ - if you let your policy lapse you are in for a boatload of surcharges - if I recall correctly. I've never done it.

I can't say about where you are.
