In Ontario, I believe you can ride on your own private property or someone else's who allows you to do so; as the Highway Traffic Act doesn't apply to private property

Dirtbike. All the way. Best way to learn to ride. And really really fun. You can learn things about accident avoidence and recovery on a dirtbike safer than on a road bike. One, the dirt bike is more forgiving over bumps (8 inches of travel in te front forks :D ). And if you start to drift on a dirt bike, get this, you can ride it out. Well, in dirt. Carful of wet pavement though, that "poo poo"'s like wet grass to a road bike.

I meant after you get your permit. That's how it is in Tennessee anyways.
