Grinding gears, hard to start

#1 Unread post by CNF2002 »

Had a couple issues with my 2002 Buell Blast today. It's been hard to start a few times...cranks good but acts like its not getting fuel. I left the valve open a few times when I first got it, wondering if I might have damaged it somehow. If I give it a little gas while I'm trying to start it she'll fire right up.

Also today on the way home I tried switching gears and it felt like it slipped between gears and started grinding. I was able to kick it down to the next lower gear and it worked fine after that. Anything I should check or does this just sometimes happen on bike trannys?

Isn't that classed as "character" on a Buell / HD? :D

How many miles does the bike have on it? Might be time for a tune-up.... new plugs, valve lash set, fine-tune the carb a bit, specially the idle and low-speed circuits. Or learn to crack the gas when starting it....lots of carbed bikes share this quirk. My FJ does, depending on the weather, it likes a bit of throttle to start.... or not.... bikes are like women, you have to figure out how to stroke 'em just right on an individual basis... but you didn't hear that from me.... :whistling:

You probably missed a shift, BTW... no big deal. An oil change can often help with notchy shifting, but the best thing is to just shift more positively.

And leaving the fuel valve on should not harm anything at all. Unless your float needle is leaky, then all that happens is a pool of raw fuel under the bike in the morning.
No Witnesses.... :shifty:

Bike only has a couple of thousand miles on it. The dealer said the 1K checkup was done before I bought it, but my experience with auto-dealers doesn't leave me with much trust. I changed the oil when I got it to a synthetic. I didn't change the transmission fluid, as it should have been done at 1K. Maybe I should? Might do it some good...shifting on it is pretty clunky, but I've heard thats common for Harley trannies.

But I suppose the poor thing could have been abused! Maybe an early tuneup wouldn't be a bad idea.

Thanks for the info.

I'd opt for the early tune up.

It all depends on how the bike was broken in.

If some one did as the good book said and putted around for the first 500 miles never opening past 1/2 throttle and changed the oil at the same mileage. then the bike could go to M/S time of tune up.

Not to many people do as they suggest (including my self)

A good tune up with cab adjustments is probable the ticket.

Good Luck!

Mike
