Southern B.C./Alberta sights?

#1 Unread post by rubthebuddha »

What are some of the must-see attractions in this area? I have a 3-day weekend coming up and I'd like to do a little trip in this area. Sad to say I'm totally ignorant of the natural and man-made wonders of southwest Canada. Also what reccomendations do you have for hotel/motels and/or great places to eat? Any info appreciated.

Be careful of the Crowsnest Pass area - they got hit with 45cm (~18 inches) of snow the other day and had some power lines downed - not sure if everything is put back to rights but......

South Central BC has some fantastic riding roads and hot springs as well (Nakusp, Halcyon)

If the Crowsnest Pass is open and not too snowy, then the Frank Slide area on the Alberta side of the border is something to see - how often do you get to see house sized boulders that have been moved several miles across a valley due to gravity alone?

This weekend? Head up to Port Angeles, grab the ferry and come on up to Port Alberni. It's a great drive and you can mix it up with a few hundred other bikers for the P.A. toy run. Well ya might not see all that much country but you could have a great time if you tend to like partying.

On the other hand, if you're like me. It's a good place to avoid. But the drive is great and you can toodle on out to the coast to check out Long beach/Tofino etc. I can't imagine doing all of Southern BC and Alberta in just three days. Me thinks just to slip over the border and check out some of the great riding in the lower mainland would take the weekend.

Plenty of hotel/motel accommodation's wherever you go. We are still experiencing some great weather here (on the island) although they did suggest it might be cloudy for the weekend. I didn't hear the "rain" word mentioned though so should be okay.

You could ride to Whistler via the Sea to Sky Highway.

Or you could go to the Okanagan via the Hope Princeton (Hwy #3). In Penticton and Kelowna and places in between you could tour some wineries if you like that kind of thing.

Or get on a ferry to Vancouver Island and ride from Nanaimo to Victoria or Victoria to Nanaimo via the Malahat.

If you could look in a Destination Highways book of BC it has lots of roads to ride and places to see.

Well I was going to take off last weekend for my little 3-dayer, but of course summer decided to end right there and then bringing a buttload of rain. So my ride is on hold temporarily.
