Noise from hub assembly V-Star 650 1998

I have a older V-Star 650 with 60000 km. It runs pretty good but lately it has been making a clicking noise out of the back hub assembly. It started only when I was pushing the bike backwards but now it clicks at all low speeds. I am having a hard time determining if the clicking noise is from the final gear assembly, brake drum, or wheel bearings. The clicking noise does not appear to be associated with any position of the wheel and when it clicks, it doesn't always do so, it clicks about 10 times per wheel revolution. Finally when you first push it backwards it does not click for about one wheel revolution but then it will start. Clicks while rolling back are louder than click moving forward. I am new to motorcycling and motorcycle mechanics. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The V-Star 650's had an issue with the rear drive because of a lack of grease on the gears from the factory. You might want to remove the rearend and inspect all the gears and splines.

Also, some larger Vulcans had a recall concerning a circlip in the rear hub that would break and cause a clicking noise just like you are describing.

Either way it sounds like you have some disassembly forthcoming.

Mine was not clicking. It was squeaking. It was squeaking enough for me to hear it over the engine noise and traffic noise at low speeds.
I had to take it in three times but the third time was when I told them to make sure they greased the splines (thanks to old-n-slow for that info).
It doesn't squeak anymore.

I had another bike once that was clicking and it was a bearing that was not seated properly.
