250cc's...too small?

What's the top speed on a 250 ninja? 70's?

I had a friend's ninja 250 up to 85 mph with plenty of throttle left. Lots of get up and go, very nimble.

I've had my wife's 250 up to 100, my son got it up to 110 going down hill.

It doesn't accelerate quick once you get past 80, but on a long strait it will do 100.

Relsek's right on the money. I've taken my friends ninja to 100, but the last 20 mph was a slow climb. It's actually pretty quick to accelerate to around 65 if you keep in in the power band. Above 65 it gets a little sluggish. Above 80 your playing a waiting game.

Are there any drawbacks or advantages to going with a Ninja 250 over some 250cc cruiser? I hope to up to a more powerful sportbike someday so I'd think the Ninja would be better for that reason, but is there anything different such as the balance or ease to learn on that is a factor?

If you aspire to be a sportbike rider I'd go with the Ninja. Just about all sportbikes are going to be more difficult to balance than most cruisers - BUT with the smaller bikes... they are all pretty easy to keep balanced. I don't think you'll have much of a problem keeping a ninja 250 upright. The weight is a bit higher on the bike than with most cruisers but the motor is light enough that it's not gonna make that much difference.

You could also check out a Hyosung Comet 250 if there is a dealer in your area. I like the hyosung 250 engine.. as it is the same one in my GV250 cruiser. Very very smooth, good power delivery.

A 250 has plenty of get up and go. It will be slower to accelerate at the top end though.

I think it is pretty intimidating when a monster SUV or any car for that matter, comes hauling up behind you-- My little old 250 cc does real well from stop to about 45 but loses steam. Maybe in really extreme cases a really fast bike might get your temporarily out of harms way but as it stated in the driver's manual, you may also be inviting yourself into a higher speed chase with even more consequences than just pulling out of the way.

The ninja sits more like a standard bike, I think that makes it a little more comfortable than a cruiser. I also believe that most of the cruiser 250s don't do real well at highway speeds. (which in Florida is around 75-80)

My wife is 5' tall, weighs in at about 100 lbs and handles the bike just fine. It is not too heavy nor is it hard to balance.
