I point out that statistically, i'm less likely to be involved in an accident on a motorcycle than in a car.

Then I hope that they don't put the other half together...Yeah, less likely to be in a crash on a bike, but if i am I'm a lot more likely to be seriously hurt.

I'm curious as to where you got those statistics. Do you have an article or link?

Please help my blind eyes, where exactly does it say that per vehicle mile traveled, riding a motorcycle is less accident-prone than a car or truck?

It doesn't, it is the usual befuddled bulldust baffles brains type of report that has no clue what it is trying to portray.

However, per vehicle mile traveled, motorcyclists were about 27 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a crash and about six times more likely to be injured.

However these are the kinds of statements that people latch onto.

It's funny how a topic posted in 2005 has a link to a 2011 article...

... and what an article it is, quoting some of IIHS' biggest manure piles.

E.g.

However, per vehicle mile traveled in 2007, motorcyclists were about 37 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a crash and nine times more likely to be injured.

How the hell would they compute the "vehicle mile traveled" statistic, unless they're sneaking around peoples' garages, peeking at odometers?

And this classic:

Helmets saved 1,483 lives in 2009, according to NHTSA, and could have saved an additional 732 if all motorcyclists had worn helmets.

Employing its God-like omniscience, NHTSA was able to tell that 1,483 people in accidents would have inevitably died without helmets, and conversely 732 people who died would have inevitably lived had they worn a helmet? Such rubbish. I'm a pretty strong proponent of helmet use, but this strains credulity. And sheeple nowadays will believe any figure quoted by a sufficiently "official sounding" source......
