1980 yamaha650 maxim starting problems

#1 Unread post by mrhoades »

Aquired a new bike and put a new battery to it. Turn the key to on but only get the tail light, no head light, no horn, no turn signal, no starter button, no dummy lights Any ideas? Main fuse tested good.

I belive that there is a park position on the key switch on some bikes where , I think, only the rear lite comes on.

What kind of bike and what year? Try the following. Is the kill switch off? jiggle the ignition switch. Pull in the clutch. Put the side stand up. Bypass the start button by touching the starter solenoid. If all else fails it's probably your fuse box with loose connections.

Year and model is 1980 Yamaha Maxim 650. Main fuse is fine (tail light stops working when fuse is pulled.) Does the key switch have three positions? I only get two. If it has three, what do they do? I only have two positions on the key switch. Wish I could tell you what they are but the words on it have faded too much.

Thanks Jean B. My key switch only goes from off to on. Does not go to park or lock. Do you think the key switch coule be the problem?

it doesn't have the other positions?
or it just doesn't turn there?

also this bike have plenty of "safety" mechanisms,
any of those could be wrong or disconnected,

for example if u are in gear and dont pull clutch it wont start
also if in neutral and the sidestand down it wont either

check alll of these and also "jump check the starter"
anyway it would be a good idea to buy the cd!

To access the other 2 positions you need to turn your handle bars full left, Then push down on the key and turn left. The first click is lock. The second click is park/lock. All Yamahas are same switch for many years. I have a new one ordered from http://www.usa123.bizland.com/merriamcy ... begin.html

It takes a round key and goes under $70.00 bucks. :D

I did jumper trick on the starter and it does turn over strong. Is there a fusible link between key switch and the fuse panel for the ignition, headlight and instrument panel? If so, where should I look?
