Which brings me to the next question: are you sure you want a 250? Everything I've heard is that you quickly outgrow them and waste money buying yet another bike.
no im not sure, but i cant afford what i want at the moment and im sick of taking the bus to class. So im thinking about getting this till i can get enough cash to get something worth while.

Could always buy a bycicle. That's what I'm doing (but...then again I live on campus...)
But why waste $1000 towards something you know you'll outgrow (everyone I've talked to, and some threads on this very forum, have said most people outgrow a 250cc within about a month) when you can put that towards the bike you actually want?

The Ninja is a bit quicker than the average 250. From what I have heard it is an absolute blast to ride and gets decent MPG.
You may outgrow its power level in a few months but that doesn't mean you still cant use it as an efficient commuter. It will still out accelerate a lot of cars and keep up with traffic even at highway speeds.
I did notice in the ad though that the plate was last current in '03 which means in CA you will have to pay a few hundred in back registration to get plates back on it (in CA you have to pay back registration for EVERY year the vehicle is not registered, makes registering a restored old car/bike a very pricey matter)
thats CA as in the peoples republik of california not canada

Because if he puts a little eblow grease into it he can probably sell it for $1200-$1400...Shiv wrote:Could always buy a bycicle. That's what I'm doing (but...then again I live on campus...)

Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

You need a commuter? A 250 should be fine. And if you clean it up, you should be able to sell it for more than you bought it. In case you haven't noticed, the motorcycle market is booming. That's why this 250 is $1k and not $500. It also means you can resell fairly easily.
Shiv ... you mention you are using your bicycle.
You are saving and plodding around on your bicycle, because of your unwillingness to ride a 250. (Nice ... go 35mph tops instead of 95) Great that's your choice. Have fun.
Meanwhile, JWF , you could be getting real saddle time on a real motorcycle that is both affordable and resellable. Experience counts for everything, and while Shiv makes a point about "Buying something you will outgrow in a month," I just son't see it. You need a commuter bike to get you around. How the heck are you going to outgrow your need to get from point A to Point B?? This one is affordable, and if you like it, it will serve you well until you are ready to move up. And Riding it will give you VALUABLE saddle time that Shiv just isn't getting.

Get some wheels now, or plod around. Seems like a no-brainer to me...

I agree with those above. A Ninja 250 has a decent amount of power, you won't find yourself outgrowing it as quickly as you would a 250 cruiser.
Go for it, it will be money well spent! I wish I could find a Ninja in my area for that much...from the ads I've seen most of the Ninja 250's in my area cost 2-2.5x's that...they're newer, sure...but the Ninja 250 has not changed in years...the early 90's versions actually have a bit more (like 5) horsepower than the current makes.

I've talked to more then a couple of people who have had a LOT of fun on a 250. Just because it is possible to get a bigger bike doesn't mean you have to.
And besides even if he only resells it for $800 next season that's $200 for a year of biking. Bus passes around here are $60 a month...
