1986 yz80-replacing piston

I bought a 1986 yz80 (from a friend, who actually posted a question not to long ago on how to get the piston off) and the piston was fried along with the ring. I removed the piston and checked the cylinder walls and it looks to be ok, but not exactly sure. Is there something specific i need to do to the cylinder before i put the new piston it, like hone it? Because my dad thinks that with 2 stroke engines that the cylinder walls might be chrome plated, so he was a little nervous about just putting the piston right back in. Please help.

Aaahhh... it's back! :wink:

Modern 2-strokes(and more and more 4-strokes) have cylinders with various hard-coatings, often lumped together under 'nikasil'. It's not really chrome, but a similar process with different materials. You can put a new crosshatch on this, but you can't bore it oversize without having it re-coated. This coating is applied directly to the aluminum of the cylinder, with no iron liner.

I don't think you 86 has this, it is probably just a straight iron liner. But you really need to find out, a service manual should tell you, if not, call a dealership and ask them. If the cylinder is not scored or pitted and measures out to the correct spec(service manual again) all you should need is a new piston, pin and bearing and ring to get the job done. And gaskets, don't forget them.... :laughing:

I have a manual coming to me. I will call a dealership tommorrow and find out about the coating, if it just needs to be crosshatched i'm able to do that. I wont for get my gaskets, im ordering a piston kit for it which includes everything i need, except the gaskets. I'll write back and inform you what happens. By the way, would you know of any places that sell Wiseco piston kits cheap? Best price i found was $57
