Diluting the AMA

#1 Unread post by High_Side »

Well the mighty inventors of the superbike class have just about destroyed decent upper class bike racing in the USA as we used to know it. How the he77 can you have so many classes with minimal manufacturer involvement in each and expect people to remain interested???? They need a STOCK 600cc class where the bikes hit the dyno immediately after the race. No more bending of the rules where the factories clearly have 10-20% more power than the privateers. Lose formula extreme, and lose 600 Supersport (the rules have been to lax for too long). When a class of racing has multiple people who can win, it becomes interesting. When there are 3 competetive bikes and 40 moving pylons who start getting lapped on lap #5, the whole thing is a joke. Close racing is better racing.
Superstock should be the new superbike IMO as well. Keep the rules tight and the field large. This should be a no-brainer IMO, but what do others in here think? I would be interested to find out.

I'm with you Bruce. Get it back to the way it was 20 years ago when it was actually interesting to watch.

well, it sounds like you should be watching the Canadian Superbike Series, (which is based upon WERA event rules in the USA -- they have tighter rules for machines, dyno limits, etc.). Try promoting that to the AMA...

The 600 National class is also similarly restricted in Canada and makes for good racing... unfortunately in the States the AMA has done some wierd things, but the Japanese manufacturers really like to one-up eachother, year after year, and they are the guys spending all the money to win, and constantly creating superior motorcycles year after year..... to lure in new street riding customers and privateer roadracers too...

I think watching 250cc World GP has generally been a good example of close racing, but there are exceptions at times... or almost ANY motocross racing and you will find the rider is still the KEY element in off-road... talent wins. The bikes are all pretty close. Of course, after awhile some company can pull an advantage and throw more money at anything, and they have pull in other areas as well (i.e. Honda in GP.. it took A LOT for the Rossi/Yam combo to beat them, politics, etc. too. The world isn't as fair as we would like, and I see that in individuals just as much as corporations... people often won't play fair, won't concede errors, etc. in simple things in life, let alone when big money business is involved... so until people as individuals change, larger entities won't either... slowwwww process... one step at a time... three steps forward, two steps back, is the best we seem to get at times without a revolution in thinking, and that doesn't happen in commitees, it happens when a few well intentioned and intelligent individuals push out good plans... but they need support, and some people don't like the politics involved in gaining support... politicians are an entirely different breed of people. Thus we are stuck with the choices of a committee developing a poorly managed race series from the AMA.

Maybe WorldSuperBike will whip out the action this year! And AMA Superbike ain't dead, the Daytona200 just ain't nothin special... and in many ways hasn't been special in awhile... i didn't even watch it this year... because the real racing is yet to come :D
