In MA regardless of what you pay for the vehicle, you pay taxes on the full market value of a vehicle. Like my Ranger, got it for $5,100 payed taxes on $5,700. :frusty:

I've purchased used vehicles before with 'check', or at a bank, but was never 'taxed' at the end of the year for it. Not sure what everyone else means, but a private used sale would not be taxed as far as I can see.

If this is true I owe a lot of taxes on the garage sale purchases I made this year! Not to mention ebay ;)

In MA if you wanna register a vehicle (be it off road, on road, water craft) you gotta pay the man. The good thing is that for non-highway use vehicles that are registered in MA, they can be used pretty much anywhere as long as you're not breaing local laws (ie wave runners registered in MA can be run on VT waters without having to contact the VT peoples).

If the bike is used....when you go to get your plates, you'll probably have to show proof of insurance, the title, and a bill of sale at the dmv.

The bill of sale will have the purchase price with previous owners signature and yours. You will pay the taxes on that price at the dmv.

If the bike is not real new you can usually just put a lower price so you dont have to pay so much tax.

Sorry - I was talking about PA and CO

In Virginia you pay taxes on a used bike when you get it registered at the DMV. The guy who sold me my 1982 Yamaha Vision gave me a copy of teh bill of sale with teh amount blank. I obviously wrote that it was free so I only paid the minimum of $30 to tax, and $10 extra to get it registered and plated.

In NC, you pay a DMV "Highway Use Tax" of 3% when you transfer a title, but not the standard sales tax. If you purchase from a dealer, you pay the dealer based on the sale price. Otherwise, you pay the DMV (along with the title fee) based on a "value table maintained by the NC DMV"; they don't care how much you paid for it in that case.

My county collects an annual property tax as well.

It would help if you said what state (or country) you are in.

If its in CA, you will pay the sales tax when you go to register the vehicle. The title is your bill of sale and the former owner has to fill it out with the sales price and sign it otherwise you can't register the bike. There is a minimum you have to pay so putting zero (or gift) won't result in no tax.

It is a (pretty disgusting) money grab since tax has already been paid on the full value of the bike... but you can't fight the government... oh wait, didn't some people fight the government over unjust taxes a few hundred years ago? Anyone know how that turned out? :frusty:

Depends on how your state handles it. You normally will get a 30 day tag (or something similar) and are expected to pay the sales tax and register the bike before that expires. Just like a car.
