ex500 to gixxer 750

#1 Unread post by Dirtytoes »

right now, i have a 2005 kawasaki ex500, have been riding for almost a full month.

i talked to this guy who used to ride bikes when he was younger.......he saw my bike and he said once you learn how to ride a bike and get comfortable on it, he said you can ride "any" bike.......

i said i wanted to get a gixxer 750 for my next bike....he said get the gixxer 1100, i was like are you sure? he said oh ya, you won't have any problems on it.

am i missing something here, or is this guy an idiot?

but anyway, that's what i want for my next bike, 750.......i'm waiting AT LEAST 6 months though......

do you guys think 6 months is enough?

I said ya only because you gave me no other option. I would have said maybe, or depends.

I wouldn't call your aquaintance an idiot because I don't know him... If you drive very safely, then that jump might not be such a bad thing, but I've always found that horse power and testosterone just don't mix, especially if the testosterone is fairly youthful....

I would hazard a guess that you don't think you're ready for a bike like the 1100, so my advice would be to listen to that little voice in there and follow it's advice...

Move up when you can ride the one you have to its full potential. You have only been riding a month. At this point you really don't know what the potential is.
This is not meant to be a slam on you. The 500 is capable of so much more than you realize right now. Move up too soon and you will never learn as much as you can. You will go no faster on the GSXR and may end up being a much slower less competent rider. Knowledge is power.
I would be the old, slow guy. Just let me know where you are going and I'll try to get there before you leave.

My opinion is that when you reach a certain point you will know, just know when it is time to or you are capable of moving up. And to be totally and frankly honest, if you need to ask someones opinion, or get "the experts" to tell you that a new bike will be okay, you aren't ready for a new one.

The only problem with that opinion is that there are a lot of people out there who like to pretend they aren't about the same as everyone else. They are more careful, a natural, or somesuch.

Over on the Pashnit forums they were talking about something like this, and one member said that he had to put over 50 000 miles on a couple of different bikes before he could truely feel comfortable just getting on a new one and riding.

Soooo, the point of my long winded ramble is that only you will know in the long run.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

I gonna vote that you stop riding motorcycles. From some recent posts you have made, you are a danger to yourself and others on the road. You want to get a gixxer right after you wad your Ninja 500? And right after you wad the ninja 500, you want to learn how to do wheelies????

You have got the attitude that kills. I dont understand why you got a Ninja 500, why didnt you hit for the squid cycle and get a gixxer 750 to start with??

There's nothing wrong with learning to wheelie. Just keep it to a parking lot away from other vehicles. Or best case, on a dirtbike, in the dirt. The fact that he DID start off on an EX500 shows that he does have SOME common sense. To say that he shouldn't be riding period is kinda harsh. To say that he needs to stop, re-evaluate how he's looking at riding period would probably be better.
Though swatter makes a good point. You've dumped your EX500 already and you want to get one of THE fastest vehicles you can legally take out on the streets? I'd stick to the 500 for a few seasons if i were you THEN consider switching to a 600. Spend some time on that (a few more seasons) THEN hit up the 750. If you take things slow, you'll be a much better rider and have a much better chance at surviving long enough to the point where you can hop on a 750 I4 and actually be able to ride it hard.

I will tone down my rhetoric a little. I agree, he needs to re-evaluate his attitude towards riding.

dude, why are you getting mad?! i said i was gonna wait AT LEAST 6 months, and that's if i'm ready by then.......you said you've read my recent posts..........if you had read them carefully you would know that i said i was gonna wait on the wheelies because i don't have enough experience.

i don't mean to be rude but if you're going to make dumb comments before you know all the facts, your opinion is not needed.
