I'm 17, No Drivers License, Can I still get a Motorcycle Lic

Hey Guys,


I'm 17, I do not have a Drivers License, Can I still get a Motorcycle License? I have my restricted/permit for a car, yet have never been on a motorcycle before. I have the money to purchase a bike, and i'm lookin at buying the ninja 250 for 3 grand at a local dealer. And I have the money to pay for a local coarse to get my waiver for the license, but are motorcycles like cars in the aspect that I have to have a Restricted or Permit for a certain amount of months before I can get my motorcycle license?

Let me say thank you before hand. I'd appreciate it if I could get a response ASAP, I'm anxious to know If I can get that bike or not. Thanks.

Oh and by the way, I live in Miami, FL. If that makes a difference.

I really belive that you can go take the proper papers and if you pass the written and driving motorcycle test that you will be issued a license for bike riding even if you don't have a car drivers license.

i'm pretty sure you can. you DON'T need to take the course before getting your rider's permit....here is what you should do:

1. get the dmv morotcycle booklet and study it or take the 2 pratice quizes on the dmv website.

2. walk into the dmv with some kind of good id (your car permit or passport) & take the motorcycle test.

3. wait 6 months...during this 6 months take the MSF to learn how to ride and get your bike

4. sincer you're under 21 you don't have to take the 'dmv riding test' , just show the dmv the certificate you get from the MSF course you took with the CHP.

What does getting a "Motorcycle Only" driver license involve? Who can get one?

1. Be at least 16 years old, and if under 18, hold a Learner's License for one year with no traffic convictions.

2. Pass the same knowledge test as for a regular Class E operator's driver license.

3. If under 21 years old, show proof of completion of a motorcycle safety course to a driver license office or tax collector office that issues licenses.

4. If at least 21 years old, show proof of completion of a motorcycle safety course to a driver license office or tax collector office that issues licenses OR pass the motorcycle knowledge and skills tests at a driver license office, tax collector office, or third-party tester that offers such tests.

Your license will be restricted to operating "Motorcycles Only."

Can I upgrade to a regular license later and have the "Motorcycle Only" restriction removed?

Yes, by passing the regular driving test in a regular four-wheel motor vehicle.

Because you are under 21, you MUST take the safety course. Since you are under 18, you MUST have a (car) learner's permit for at least a year.

Since you already have the learners permit for the car, why not just get that finished and then do your motorcycle license - Matter of fact, if you take the safety course, you can probably get your motorcycle and Car licenses on the same day... Since, you can get the motorcycle license without waiting once you have the car license.

TechBMW is right.....but although i'm not sure about your state.....i think you can still get the motorcycle permit...but for the license you have to wait 6 months which by then you'll have your car license also.
